Hyperthyroidism refers to a situation wherein the thyroid gland has an overactive tissue that results in overproduction. This overproduction leads to an excess number of circulating free thyroid hormones. Because the thyroid hormone affects nearly all body cells, the result is that vital functions of the body also overdo their regular functioning.

One of the immediate impacts of hyperthyroidism is an increased heart beat rate, palpitations, ands sweating. Another impact is that it may overstimulate metabolism. In general, hyperthyroidism is more common in women than in men, and is especially common in women ages 20 to 40.

Causes of Hyperthyroidism

The following are the most common causes of hyperthyroidism:

* Inflammation of the thyroid
* Oral consumption of thyroid hormone tablets
* Malfunctioning or deficiencies in the immune system
* Hyperthyroidism may also happen when the body has taken a substance or is producing a substance that causes the thyroid gland to make more hormones than needed by the body.
* Due to tumor in the thyroid

Symptoms of Hyperthyroidism

One of the most common symptom of hyperthyroidism is unexplained weight loss. The weight loss is often accompanied by loss of appetite. Apart from these symptoms, the following are also indicators of the disease:

* Diarrhea
* Goiter or increase in the size of thyroid glands
* Fast heart rate or palpitation
* Tiredness
* Sleeplessness
* Anxiety
* Experiencing tremors in the body or feeling shaky
* Feeling sweaty and hot, especially even in comfortable situations
* A shortness of breath
* Irritation of the eyes
* Nausea and vomiting
* Loss of libido or the urge to have sex

Detection of Hyperthyroidism

Detection of hyperthyroidism is an important step toward finding a treatment for the disease. On the other hand, the inability to accurately detect the disease can lead to long-term effects, one of which is osteoporosis.

The following are the means to detect the presence of the disease in a woman:

* Based on family history. This is because the disease may be passed on from parent to offspring and from generation to generation.
* By physical examination. Although this is one of the easiest ways to detect the disease, it is often inaccurate in itself so laboratory tests and other supplemental procedures are needed to accurately pinpoint the presence of the disease.
* Through blood tests. During blood tests, the level of thyroid-stimulating hormones in the blood is monitored. If the level of the hormone is low, it indicates that something is inhibiting the pituitary glands to produce hormones and thus an indicator for having hyperthyroidism.
* Through measurement of specific antibodies.

Treatments for Hyperthyroidism

Hyperthyroidism can be cured through medication, therapy, or surgery, depending on the extent of the disease. When using medication to treat the disease, the most commonly prescribed drug is Thyrostatics. This drug is known to inhibit the production of thyroid hormones. However, the most effective method of treatment is still surgery. In surgeries, the tumor in the thyroid gland is removed.

Lack of vitamin D seems to be common in many populations and this increases the frequency of weak bones, heart problems, poor blood circulation, cancer, aging signs and age related diseases. Here you can read about the functions of vitamine D and how to get enough of this substance.

Vitamin D is a group of fat-soluble substances (calciferols) of which the most important are D2 and D3.The liver and kidneys convert vitamin D to the active form called calcitriol that is used to regulate many processes in the body.

The best natural source of vitamin D (D3) is fat fish. The skin also makes vitamin D3 with the help of energy from sun light.

THE ROLE OF VITAMIN D

Vitamin D promotes the uptake of calcium from the intestines and the re-uptake of calcium from the kidneys. It stimulates the white blood cells to catch foreign or dangerous elements. It also regulates (mostly stimulates) the production and maturing of new cells in many tissues.

CONSEQUENCES OF VITAMIN D DEFICIENCY

Lack of vitamin D is caused by poor diet, by lack of sun exposure and by certain conditions that hinders the uptake of vitamin D in the digestive tract.

Vitamin D deficiency causes diseases that gives deformed bones, low calcium content in the bones and brittle bones, like rickets in children and osteomalacia or osteoporosis.in adult persons.

Growing evidence show that too low intake of vitamin D contributes to circulatory problems like hypertension, narrowing of blood vessels, heart failure and stoke. Persons with diabetes seem to get the most increased risk by lack of vitamin D. Vitamin D deficiency also seems to increase the risk of getting cancer, especially colo-rectal, breast and prostate cancer.

Low intake of vitamin D gives poor immune function and can make a person susceptible to infections of various kind or to autoimmune diseases like diabetes type1, and also to diabetes type 2.

Low levels of vitamin D in the body probably also contributes to increased aging signs on the cellular levels and age-realted diseases like diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease Parkinson’s disease and peripheral neuropathy.

Low levels of calcium in the body also seems to contribute to the risk of getting many of the listed ailments, especially the bone disorders and cancer.

HOW TO GET ENOUGH VITAMIN D

A commonly recommended daily intake of vitamin D is 200-600 IU (international units)., with the highest doses for older people. According to growing evidence, this seems to be too little and up to 2000 IU may be good for the health. Obese persons seem to require more vitamin D than normally weighted individuals.

However, a too high daily intake of vitamin D is toxic and a much higher intake that 2000 IU may give risk for poisoning.

Fat fish and fish liver oil are the best natural sources of vitamin D3. Another good natural way to get vitamin D3 is by exposing great skin areas for sunlight some time every week. Some food products are often fortified in vitamin D, especially milk and juice. In the United States fortified products are probably the most important supply of this vitamin for many people.

Food from plant sources contain little vitamin D, but fatty plant products contain some vitamin D2. People that do not eat fish often, do not expose their skin to sunlight or do not consume fortified products have a risk of getting too little vitamin D.

If it is difficult to get enough vitamin D by the food alone or by the amount of sun exposure, a supplement can be useful, for example supplements based on fish liver as a source. ØIf the diet is low in calcium or if the purpose is to improve bone integrity, it will usually be wise to take a supplement of calcium together with vitamin D. A too high intake of both calcium and vitamin D can however result in unwanted calcium deposits in the body.

Osteoporosis is a bone disease that is prevalent in women after their menopausal period. It is characterized by a reduction in bone density and leads to an increase in the risk of having bone fracture. In osteoporosis, the mineral content in the bones as well as the structure of the bone itself is greatly altered, making the woman susceptible to bone injuries and their complications.

Detecting Osteoporosis

By itself, osteoporosis has no specific symptoms. The risk or presence of the disease is only detected if the woman becomes injured or suffers bone fractures in circumstances that healthy people would normally not suffer the same fate. In this case, the situation is described as fragility fracture because the injury is greatly due to the weak structure of the bone.

In the more advanced cases of osteoporosis, vertebral collapse is also noted. This is a condition that indicates that the vertebra is no longer able to support the woman’s body weight. This is also accompanied by severe back pain, and regular and stinging pain caused by nerve compression. Fractures may also occur in other body parts, and depending on the severity and state of health of the patient, surgery may be recommended.

A very delicate situation is when a hip fracture occurs. In this case, prompt surgery is required because the condition brings with it deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism with fatal consequences.

Treatment of Osteoporosis

Thanks to modern technology, there are now varied means for treating osteoporosis:

*Medication is the most common and a readily available form of treatment. In medication for osteoporosis, bisphosphonates are the most commonly used drug and is the first-line treatment for women who are affected with osteoporosis. However, the drug has a record of poor absorption. In order to maximize the potency of the drug, the patient must not take anything for at least 30 minutes after taking the medication. Another drug commonly used is teriparatide. The teriparatide drug is given to women with confirmed cases of osteoporosis or those who have already suffered bone fractures. Moreover, it is also used as an alternative to bisphosphonates especially when the patient cannot tolerate the latter. Teriparatide is administered in small injections.

* Another treatment that holds the future for the treatment of osteoporosis is hormone replacement. Although this process holds a lot of promise, its application as treatment for osteoporosis is not strongly recommended unless there are other uses for it.

* Nutritional factors. Calcium and Vitamin D are two very important nutrients a woman must have to effectively counter osteoporosis. Calcium is essential for bone growth, bone healing, and for maintaining bone strength. Calcium supplements are easily available in the market and it can contribute much toward countering osteoporosis. On the other hand, vitamin D helps reduce the incidence of fractures in women.

* Exercise. The proper amount and regular exercise are also very vital in ensuring that osteoporosis is treated and the woman’s bone health restored to top condition.

Osteoporosis Overview

Osteoporosis is a health condition in which the thickness of the bones is reduced and they become more prone to fracture. The bone mineral density (BMD) is reduced significantly which disrupts the bone micro architecture and alters the number of non-collagenous proteins in the bone. Osteoporosis results in fragile, porous, and week bones. The components like protein, collagen, and calcium that make the bones and give them the strength are lessened and this causes osteoporosis. Osteoporosis can cause the bones to break, crack, or collapse even by a small injury. The common areas in which the serious fractures occur are spine, hips, and wrists. Women are more prone Osteoporosis especially when they have reached their menopause stage. The condition is called postmenopausal osteoporosis. Osteoporosis can occur in both men and women.

Common Symptoms of Osteoporosis

There are no particular symptoms of Osteoporosis apart from fractures in different skeleton bones. Sometimes this bone disease is not detected for years and patients are not aware of their condition until the problem is serious or there is a server painful fracture. Osteoporosis can be identified from the areas in which the fractures occur.

Spine fractures that result in severe back pain and hunched-back can be Osteoporosis

Minimal trauma fracture occurred in course of normal activity can be a sign of Osteoporosis

Hip fractures caused due to falling or a trivial accident can be a symptom of Osteoporosis

Prevention and Treatment of Osteoporosis

Prevention is the treatment of osteoporosis as there is nothing that can completely rebuild the bones. Early detection can help to reduce the risk of fractures and taking adequate amount of calcium and vitamin can help to increase bone density and strength. Medications that can help to make the bones strong, such as alendronate (Fosamax), risedronate (Actonel), raloxifene (Evista), ibandronate (Boniva), calcitonin (Calcimar), and zoledronate (Reclast) can be helpful for osteoporosis patients.

Some of the preventive measures that an osteoporosis patient must take are:

Take a protein and calcium rich balance diet and exercise regularly.

Curtail alcohol intake and quit cigarette smoking.

Intake of calcium supplements can help in building strong and healthy bones.

Diagnosis of Osteoporosis

Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA or DEXA) is the most common process that is used to diagnosis osteoporosis. In addition to this certain blood tests and X-rays are done to check the acuteness of the problem. All tests must be performed by highly experienced doctors, who have complete knowledge of the disease and are experts in the field.
